ADD / ADHD – Nutrition for Health and Wellness

Why does your child have a difficulty in maintaining clear mental focus toward a task? Why do you or your child have challenges with problem solving, planning ahead, understanding others' actions, and impulse control?

It is difficult to understand how conventional medicine justifies using the medications available for Attention Deficit Diagnoses with all of the known potential side effects without ruling out some simple problems in the brain biochemistry first.

In working with a nutritionist to address A.D.D./A.D.H.D. first, we try to find out what is causing the problem and remove or resolve it. For example: Is there a blood sugar problem, is there a toxic metal syndrome or a functional thyroid shift? Second, the function of the brain and nervous system need to be improved to be more stable. Dr. Shaw specializes in working with the functional changes in your body and brain chemistry to correct the cause of the symptoms and remove the disorder.

In working with a nutritionist you will hear the word "functional" quite a bit. What we are referring to is that not all problems show up in your blood work or on an MRI of the brain, and there may be a more subtle change in your system that is not bad enough to raise the red flags for your medical doctor. Attention Deficit Spectrum is a perfect example.

Most patients who treat in my office for A.D.D. have already worked with their medical doctor and have used a myriad of medicines to control the symptoms but did not like the side effects. Many others have a diagnosis but are concerned about the long term risks involved with medicating and are hoping to find an alternative route. Are there people who need medication for their A.D.D. symptoms? Absolutely, however, if a change in diet and support with vitamin therapies corrects the problem, the natural approach to treating the symptoms might be the best first step for you or your child.

My partner is a counselor. It is important to understand that A.D.D. can be a symptom of a death or divorce in the family, child abuse, a parent's job loss, or other sudden changes causing anxiety or depression. I will refer these patients directly for proper evaluation and management of these stressful challenges.

It is important to note that when you or your child's medical history and health related goals are explored, that consultation is held directly with Dr. Shaw, not an untrained individual, a questionnaire or a computer program.

I look forward to working directly with you or your child to remove the causes of the behavioral or developmental disorders.
